Croatia is a land full of history and charm, with endless family attractions and a long list of UNESCO World Heritage sight-seeing hotspots. Not only is Croatia a must-see destination for culture, but it’s also got some of the most beautiful beaches in the world – perfect for any break in the sun.
If you’re getting ready to visit, check out some of these top Croatian experiences and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime.
Dubrovnik
It’s not really a Croatian holiday without visiting the capital, Dubrovnik. Even a day trip to this ancient city is something to be savoured, with stone buildings, terracotta roofs and beautifully preserved churches, palaces, forts and castles to explore.
16th century walls enclose this UNESCO World Heritage site and offer days wondering the cobblestones streets, walking along the walls and venturing through markets, shops, cafes and medieval monasteries. Even if you’re only visiting for a day or two, there are plenty of activities and attractions to keep you and the whole family occupied.
Zlatni Rat Beach
Don’t be put off by the name, as this beach is recognized as one of the most gorgeous coastlines in the world. It’s sometimes referred as the Golden Cape or Golden Horn because of its odd V shaped shore. This white pebbled beach is bordered by a cluster of trees and, if you go inward, you’ll find the remains of an ancient Roman villa. The area is well known to all the locals, and you’ll fit right in basking by the shoreline and taking a paddle in the shallow waters.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Croatia’s beauty rivals all other holiday spots, with amazing scenery and jaw-dropping lakes and waterfalls. In Plitvice Lakes National Park you’ll find 16 different bright blue and green lakes, surrounded by mountains and gorgeous waterfalls – the highest of which tower over 75 metres high. This park is also home to some outstanding wildlife including eagles, wolves and bears. There’s lots to do in the park for all ages, such as walks, hikes, kayaking tours and boat trips.
Eat like a local
Let’s be honest, one of the main reasons people holiday is to try out new dishes and enjoy delicious homemade cuisine. Croatia’s culinary delights have a deep rooted history, with influences from Hungary, Turkey, Greece and Italy. You’ll find flavourful dishes with fresh spices and herbs like rosemary, sage and oregano. There’s plenty of choice as well, from local dishes like stews, soups, grilled meats and pastas, to more kid-friendly flavours including burgers, fish and chips and Asian dishes.
If you want to really enjoy your meal like a Croatian, order one of their classic dishes like black truffle pasta, octopus peka or the seafood platters. Don’t worry about the little ones either, as you’ll find children’s menus at almost every restaurant.

We went to Croatia for the first time this summer and LOVED it. Split and Hvar were so beautiful and I’d love to go back and visit the lakes. Where is that in the first picture? That looks amazing!
