I have been lucky enough to have been invited to Croatia this May by Just You, a travel company that specialises in solo travel (as opposed to ‘singles 18/30 type holidays!) and I cannot wait. I’ve never been to Croatia before and I am SO excited about this trip because the country looks absolutely stunning. I’m a huge believer in people feeling able to travel on their own, whether you’re in a relationship or not, especially if you’re a woman, so this is going to be fascinating.
Before I pack my bright yellow suitcase and head off, I thought I’d do some research into what I can expect from Croatia. My trip, ‘Croatia & the Makarska Riviera’, will be for seven nights and I’ll talk more about what the trip involves over on WitWitWoo in the coming weeks, but for now, I wanted to share with you 7 reasons why I think you should visit Croatia too.
1. The weather
I’m a sun worshipper through and through and Croatia is definitely one of Europe’s sunniest spots. I can expect 12 hours of sunshine when I visit in May and if that’s not a reason to visit, I don’t know what is!
2. Game of Thrones
I’m a huge GoT fan and Croatia had a starring role in the series. Dubrovnik’s city walls and forts, Trsteno Arboretum on the outskirts of the city and the Fortress of Klis all had starring roles.
3. Stunning beaches
Think pretty pebbled beaches as opposed to white sandy ones, but they are just as beautiful as they are lapped by Croatia’s crystal clear waters. The most popular beaches will get crowded of course, but there are plenty of hidden gems you can still visit.
4. Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is arguably one of Europe’s most interesting and enchanting cities. Visit the old town in the early evening to avoid the worst of the crowds and then seek out one of the beautiful bars that overlooks the sea to watch the sun set – simply stunning.
5. Food & drink
Istria is known for its truffles (black and white), and Croatia offers many winery tours because the climate suits vineyards so well, even though Croatian wine isn’t well known in the rest of Europe just yet. Croatian food is a wonderful combination of classic Mediterranean and Italian flavour with a new-world twist, serving rustic classics such as spit-roast lamb.
Let us know if you’ve been to Croatia … we’d love to hear all about it.
Amazing scenery! The Game of Thrones bit is a good touch. 🙂
Well I have never heard of this place but would love to visit some day thanks for sharing this lovely article with us .
I truly can’t wait to get to Croatia. I believe it to be one of the most beautiful places in the world and I’ve only seen pictures! You’ve got me even more excited!!
I haven’t been to Croatia yet but judging from these pictures this place is just WOW! It’s beaches are just truly breathtaking. I would love to swim in those beautiful and clear waters of Croatia. This is definitely a place worth visiting. It truly shoots up in my bucket list since it is also a GOT location.
The beaches sure do look incredible in Croatia. It looks like it has some unbelievable National Parks too. A truly beautiful place XX
